Closed on 12 July 1916, in the scheme's first week. The only known photograph dates from 1902, and even with it in hand the exact spot is disputed: the blocked doorway beside the archway and the ground floor windows next to it are the best guess. The building has been altered so heavily since, possibly losing a storey, that the guess is all there is. " John Dunn is named in the 1829 directory. The 1861 census gives Mary Thompson, 49 and born at Aikton, as innkeeper; John Robinson, a 32-year-old cooper born in Ireland, is recorded there in 1891; and George Lewthwaite, 38 and Carlisle-born, is the innkeeper of the 1901 census. The Cumberland News ran an illustrated retrospective on the pub in May 1991.
