Carlisle golfers played on the Swifts racecourse — the same ground the Turf was built to overlook — until 1890, then at Dalston Green, then back to the Swifts again. It was a winter-only club, because the land was wanted for farming in summer. In 1895 they went in with Silloth so members could play year-round on the coast and at Dalston in winter.

In 1908 they decided Carlisle needed a course of its own all year and moved to Durran Hill Park as Carlisle City Golf Club. The land was rented and couldn't be bought, so in 1936 they bought 132 acres at Aglionby for £3,600, which is where they've stayed.

Major Charles MacKenzie laid out the course — brother of Alister MacKenzie, of Augusta National — then Theodore Moone altered it, and Philip Mackenzie Ross remodelled it in 1944. The clubhouse opened on 25 March 1940. The name changed to Carlisle Golf Club in 1959.

Sydney Scott was the professional here from 1945 to 1957, and finished second in the 1954 Open at Royal Birkdale. The club has hosted Open regional qualifying six times.
