Number fifty-two on the 1920 roll. There is one good fix on where it stood: when Botcherby School opened in March 1900, the Carlisle Journal placed the new building and its master's house near the corner of Warwick Road, opposite the Star Inn. So the pub faced the school, and closed about seven years after the school shut its doors for the first time. uk gives 1934 as the closing year. And here is what became of it.

The State Management Scheme's own account of the Magpie Inn says the new pub was built to replace the old Star Inn, which had been the only pub in that part of the city and a centre for communal and sporting activities. The scheme bought 4,278 square yards on Victoria Road and Botcherby Hall for demolition, and the Magpie opened on 4 December 1933 with a bowling green taking up half the site.

The Star's sporting role was designed into its replacement. " Botcherby was a small enough place that a single pub serving it across the nineteenth century is plausible, which would put this pub's own documented lineage back to at least 1855 -- but nothing found here confirms the two are the same site rather than a coincidence of location, so it is recorded as a possibility rather than folded into the story above.
