Lakeland Gate

Lakeland Gate closed after dinner service on 7 September 2026, along with every other Brewers Fayre in the country, and not for any reason to do with Carlisle. It was a modern outlier, like the Toby: built in 1999, refurbished in 2005, trading as a Brewers Fayre since around 2006, attached to the Premier Inn next door. No older building, no listing, no State Management link; a purpose-built roadside family restaurant. The name is marketing, Carlisle as the northern gateway to Lakeland, and it pitched itself as a base for Hadrian's Wall, Birdoswald and the Lake District.

There is one genuine thread back to the old pubs. Whitbread bought the Caledonian and the old Red Lion when the State Management Scheme was sold off in 1973. Whitbread has since left brewing and traditional pubs altogether, and its Carlisle presence came down to this. The same company name at both ends: buyer of a Victorian railway hotel in 1973, builder of a motorway-side family diner in 1999.

Then it left that too. In April 2026 Whitbread announced a five-year plan to save £250 million and cut about 3,800 jobs, and part of it was abandoning separately branded restaurants altogether in favour of dining rooms inside its Premier Inns. All 89 Brewers Fayre restaurants closed on 7 September. All 106 Beefeaters followed on the 10th, including the Border Gate at Carleton. Table Table, Cookhouse + Pub and Bar + Block had gone on the 3rd. Around two hundred sites in total.

It was put on the market as a going concern in July 2026, advertised at £500,000. Whitbread has since agreed a conditional sale of 53 of its restaurants to Queensway Inns, who intend to relaunch them as value pubs, but Cumbria Crack reported on 22 August 2026 that Lakeland Gate was not among them and was still for sale. The other 208 have no announced future.

So Carlisle loses its only Brewers Fayre, and with it the last of the format the White Quey out at Stoneraise belonged to: the out-of-town family pub with a car park, a soft play barn and a menu aimed at people with children. That model arrived in the early nineties and has now gone from the district entirely.
