Number fourteen on the scheme's 1920 roll, on Shaddongate. Two sources agree it closed in 2000, which makes it one of the longer-lived state pubs: taken in 1916, sold out of state hands in the 1970s, and still going at the end of the century. What became of the building has not been established here. A landlord's departure is the last word found on it as a going concern: the Evening News and Star reported on 21 October 1998 that the outgoing landlord was quitting the Duke after two years.

By 25 January 2001 the paper was reporting the building would be turned into private accommodation -- slightly later than the 2000 closing date usually given, and this is likely the more precise account of when the pub actually stopped trading.
