The Carleton pub this site could not place. It is number 76 on the scheme's roll of 1920, and Mike Tuer's Cumberland database gives its span: first in the directories in 1847, last recorded in 1920 or 1921. That dating matters, because it means the Blue Bell was one of the houses the Board shut almost immediately after taking it. The scheme acquired the district's pubs in 1916, listed this one on the 1920 roll, and closed it within a year or so.
Carleton had three licensed houses on that roll and in the directories: this one, the Golden Fleece, and the Greenbank, which survives as the Nosey Cow. Two of the three were gone inside five years of nationalisation.
