History

Opened Founded 1900

Founded in 1900, and it marked its 125th season with an opening day on 13 April 2025. One grass green, six rinks, played outdoors from April to September.

It is a serious club rather than a green with a hut on it. Courtfield hosted the first Junior International series, is affiliated to Bowls England and the Cumbria Bowling Association, and has produced several county presidents. Visiting bowlers rate the green and the teas the members put on.

It sits between the Eden and Warwick Road with the river behind it, a few hundred yards from the Subscription Bowling Club on Myddleton Street. Two greens that close together says something about how much bowls this city once played.

On whether it belongs in a pub directory: it holds a licence and has a bar, which is why CAMRA list it in their own pub and club guide, and why it is here. But the bar is for members, there is no cask, and you cannot walk in off the street the way you can at the Crown or the Near Boot. Treat this entry as a record that the place exists and is licensed, not as a suggestion for tonight.
