Also known locally as the 'Billy James,' named for William James, the radical MP returned for Carlisle in 1820. It traded in the Willowholme area from the 1830s as a beerhouse before becoming a full pub, dropping out of the trade directories around 1910-11 — a separately-held Carlisle pub database gives 1912 for the same closure, a trivial year's difference.
