The Gleaner is known from what replaced it. In November 1875 a temperance society opened the British Workman Institute in the former Gleaner public house. A Gleaner stood at 2 Old Grapes Lane, in the Lanes behind Scotch Street, trading before 1829; one record ends it in 1870 and another in 1875, the year the Institute opened, so it may well be the same house: see the Gleaner Inn.
