The best name among Carlisle's lost pubs, on one of the thinnest records. It appears in the local directories from 1844 to 1848, and the records disagree on where it stood. One places a British Field Piece on Caldew Brow, from 1844 to 1851. Another has a British Field Place from 1837 that became the Union Inn on Citadel Row in 1850, which may be the same house under a slipped spelling. A field piece is a light artillery gun, which suggests a soldiers' house, but that is a guess and nothing more.

Where was the British Field Piece? One record puts it on Caldew Brow (1844-51); another has a British Field Place from 1837 that became the Union Inn on Citadel Row in 1850.
