Founded in 1909 and laid out by James Braid — five-time Open champion and one of the Great Triumvirate with Harry Vardon and J.H. Taylor, who designed a great many British courses after he stopped competing in 1912.
Heathland and moorland on sand, which drains well enough to play all year. Golf World have called it the jewel of Cumbria.
The clubhouse bar and restaurant are well spoken of by visitors, and open to more than just golfers.
