Placed from the Ordnance Survey grid reference, NY4431362915, in Historic England's gazetteer of the scheme's premises. The building's use in 2018: residential.

At Barclose, near Scaleby, north-east of the city. It was originally the Joiners, from the early nineteenth century, and later took the name the Heilk Moon, whose origin has been argued over locally for years; the likeliest explanation offered is that it is a corruption of an older name or phrase. It was still the Joiners' Arms, Barclose, Scaleby, on the Cumberland News's list of July 1916 of the Longtown division's licensed houses the Board was taking over, and the scheme acquired it in 1917.

By 1968 it was one of three houses the scheme had turned over to tied tenants, under a policy of letting pubs that were not paying rather than managing them, and it was improved that year. It was offered for sale with the rest of the scheme's estate in 1972, and by 2018 it was a house.

Sold to Scottish & Newcastle as part of Group 1, handed over on 19 April 1973. Who bought the rest

Open question

An unsolved mystery

Where does the name of the Heilk Moon at Barclose, Scaleby, come from, and when after the scheme put it up for sale in 1972 did it close? It was the Joiners first, and the name has been argued over locally for years.

If you know the answer, or where it might be found (an old photograph, a family story, a document), tell us and it goes into the story above.
