On Ferguson's Lane -- a separate pub from the Duke of York already covered on this site at Shaddongate. Rachel Huddert is named in the 1829 directory, and the 1861 census gives Richard Carruthers, 36 and born in Carlisle, as innkeeper. By the time the Carlisle Patriot advertised it to let on 5 December 1873, it was already described as "lately a temperance eating and lodging house," meaning it had given up serving as a licensed pub some time before that.
