Placed on Denton Holme from the position of pubs still standing there. Somewhere on this street, not this doorway

Closed for its own conduct, which is rarer in this archive than closure by demolition or decline. It first appears in the directories in 1880 and probably dates from about then. The scheme took it on 22 August 1916 and the record says it shut in 1927 following adverse police reports. What happened after that is genuinely muddled: the scheme's own sale catalogue lists a Denton Inn at 50 Denton Street, possibly trading as Denton Wine Stores, sold to Scottish & Newcastle on 16 April 1973.

So either the name moved sixty doors down the street, or the Board kept an off-licence going under the old name, or somebody wrote the wrong number in a ledger. No closing date has been found for the second one.
