The Crown and Mitre
- Gone
- Closed around 1883
- There now
- Partly Dalston Butchers
- Address
- The Square, Dalston
- Where exactly
- In Dalston. The exact spot isn't known, so the pin marks the place, not the building. The position is approximate.
On the square at Dalston, in the building now partly occupied by Dalston Butchers. It opened on 18 September 1822, an unusually exact date for a village inn, and closed as a pub around 1883. A White Swan stood nearby. Not the Crown & Mitre in Carlisle, or the one at Crosby-on-Eden. It was licensed later than that. At the Cumberland Ward licensing sessions of September 1892 the police objected to renewing the licence of the Crown and Mitre Inn, Dalston, 'recently occupied by Robert Nelson', owned by Margaret Martin of Liverpool, as unnecessary and unsuitable and with two convictions against it.

Open question
A date we can't pin down
When did the Crown and Mitre at Dalston close? It is given here as about 1883, but the police objected to its licence at the Cumberland Ward sessions of September 1892.
If you know the answer, or where it might be found (an old photograph, a family story, a document), tell us and it goes into the story above.
