Founded, by its own account, in 1862, though it is not in the 1873 trade directory, so the date may be more tradition than fact. First traceable in Slater's Directory of 1884, at 41 Lowther Street, still there in 1901 and 1906 and renumbered 20 Lowther Street by 1910; a Carlisle Journal advertisement of February 1914 has Tiffen's taking over that Lowther Street address, so the club had moved on by then. It resurfaces at the Crescent by 1921, at 8 Victoria Place by 1929, and at Portland Square from March 1938. It kept that last address for the rest of its life: in 1977 it merged with the County Club to form the Border and County Club, still at Portland Square.
