Where exactly

Placed near Portland Place; no building survives to pin down the exact spot on Portland Square itself

Founded, by its own account, in 1862 -- though the date doesn't appear in the 1873 trade directory, so it may be a rounder tradition than fact. First traceable in Slater's Directory of 1884, at 41 Lowther Street, still there in 1901 and 1906 and renumbered 20 Lowther Street by 1910; a Carlisle Journal advertisement of February 1914 has Tiffen's taking over that Lowther Street address, so the club had moved on by then.

It resurfaces at the Crescent by 1921, at 8 Victoria Place by 1929, and at Portland Square from March 1938. It kept that last address for the rest of its life: in 1977 it merged with the County Club to form the Border and County Club, still at Portland Square.
