Originally on Caldew Brow before a move to Wood Street, where it's named on the 1860s 50-inch Ordnance Survey map, on the north side of the street. Recorded in the 1891 census (James Flynn, innkeeper, born Ireland) and cited in Davidson's history of Carlisle's breweries and public houses, which notes a surviving pub token from this house — a rare piece of physical pub-trade ephemera. It's also recorded under the alternative name the Jolly Hatters, and appears in the trade directories through to 1894.
