Originally on Caldew Brow, trading from 1823 by one record and from 1847 by another, before a move to new premises on Wood Street in 1848; the old Caldew Brow building was demolished in 1852. On Wood Street it is named on the 1860s 50-inch Ordnance Survey map, on the north side of the street. It's also recorded under the alternative name the Jolly Hatters, and Davidson's history of Carlisle's breweries and public houses notes a surviving pub token from this house, a rare piece of physical pub-trade ephemera.
John Nicholson, its keeper from at least 1847, also let the Black Lion on Irishgate Brow for its owners, which was to let through him in 1858, 1861, 1863 and 1866. The Hatters moved to new premises again in 1878. In September 1884 the licence passed from John Nicholson to James Hill, and the 1891 census has James Flynn, innkeeper, born Ireland. It appears in the trade directories through to 1894; one record ends it in 1893.
