One family held it for most of a century. John Thompson had it for "upwards of 60 years," per a Carlisle Patriot notice of 11 October 1862 putting it up to let, and Agnes Thompson, 76 and born in Carlisle, is recorded as innkeeper in the 1861 census -- presumably his widow or relative, carrying the licence on. Patrick Carr, 53 and born in Wigton, was publican by the 1901 census. The Carlisle Patriot of 31 May 1907 records the licence being considered at the final hearing before it closed.
