History
The name is the local industry. Cowans Sheldon built cranes on London Road from the 1840s — railway cranes, breakdown cranes, dock cranes shipped worldwide — and this pub took its name from the works.
It's a traditional local with a pool table and live singers, and it's one of the few places anywhere still serving Younger's Scotch Bitter, which was once ordinary across the city and now isn't.
It stands a few hundred yards from the Railway Inn, which drew on the same crane works, the London Road goods depot opposite and the Upperby engine sheds. That pub shut in 2005. This one didn't.
