The Black Lion

State Management pub

Proof of how far the state's reach went: a remote village local in the north-eastern farming country, on the rolls with the rest.

Country pub at Hethersgill with a log burner, pool table and two dartboards. Well-priced ales and, by local account, the best toasties in Cumbria.

History

A remote village local out in the north-eastern farming country, and a confirmed scheme pub — which is the point of it. The state's reach went right out here.

Beyond that the record is thin: no build date, no listing, no detailed history. Better said than padded.

There are two Black Lions on the scheme list. This is the Hethersgill one; the other is on Durdar Road south of the city, and it's a Redfern building. Opposite corners of the district, same heraldic name.

Refurbished in June 2024 — log burner, pool, darts, Sky Sports, real ale and toasties. Live music, bingo, quiz nights and a lot of pub games. Open-plan but reads as three rooms.
